Ubuflu

I’ve unfortunately been stuck in bed the last two days due to the flu. Luckily I’m feeling much better today thanks to lots of dayquil and OJ.

My Speed Test

Certainly not as good as some folks. I’m hoping to join the 50mb group soon though.

Clouds

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

Am I missing something with this whole exciting cloud metaphor? It sounds like something we invented awhile ago that I personally like to call the Internet.

What *is* interesting, IMHO, is the advancements being made in the area of autonomic and elastic computing. Furthermore, the idea of utility computing is a fascinating one to me.

What got me looking into “cloud computing”? I saw Robert Collins discussing it in #bzr the other day and using Amazon’s EC2 services to run bazaar’s test suite (which I understand to be a very comprehensive).

I used to play and develop on muds back in the day and I’m wondering if EC2 is a viable solution to host such a text based game. I’ll have to look into it and maybe use it as an excuse to try EC2 out myself :)

Xfce 4.6 is out!

Friday, February 27th, 2009
“After more than two years of development, Xfce 4.6.0 has just been released! Xfce 4.6 features a new configuration backend, a new settings manager, a brand new session manager and sound mixer as well as several huge improvements of its core components.”

Xfce 4.6 is definitely rocking and I’m very happy with it! There are a number of significant improvements and enhancements that make the Xfce desktop a real pleasure to use.

A lot of folks have been asking if Xfce 4.6 will be in Jaunty. I’m happy to say that it already is (or release candidate 1 anyhow, the actual 4.6.0 should hit the archive soon) and I’m really looking forward to spending the next few short months until the relase of Jaunty to try and polish Xubuntu 9.04 as much as possible. Alas, work is keeping me extremly busy but excitingly Xubuntu has been incredibly lucky to welcome a number of new contributors this release cycle that are reallly making a difference. :)

A few groups of people I’d like to shout out kudos to include the Xfce Development Team, the Debian Xfce Team, members of the Xubuntu team and my fellow Xubuntu contributors.

I’m ready to rocky and roll for Jaunty with Xfce 4.6. Are you? :)

Forever Young

Monday, December 8th, 2008

A cerebral aneurysm or brain aneurysm is a cerebrovascular disorder in which weakness in the wall of a cerebral artery or vein causes a localized dilation or ballooning of the blood vessel. A disorder one would never imagine would take the life of a friend so young. We thought we were invincible, once again we’re proven wrong.

Forever Young

A gentle wind blew cross the land
Reaching out to take a hand
For on the winds the angels came
Calling out your name.

Left behind, the people’s tears
Loving memories of the years
Of joy and love, a life too short.

On angel’s wings, a heavenly flight
The journey home, towards the light
To those who weep, a life is gone
Forever young, a sweet fawn.

Xubuntu Hug Day!!!

Fellow Xubuntu Lovers!

My name is Charlie, hanging around IRC as charlie-tca. I’m helping
organize this week’s HUG DAY!

This week’s target is ** drum roll please ** XUBUNTU!

* 118  New bugs need a hug
* 50   Confirmed bugs just need a review

Bookmark it, add it to your calendars, turn over your egg-timers!
* Thursday, October 2nd
* http://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuBugDay/20081002

Can’t stress it enough: EVERYONE can help !

BLOG IT! Especially those on the Planet! There are people who want to
help but don’t know how and sit on the sidelines of the blog-o-sphere
reading. I need your help to get those eyes from blogs to bugs. Let us
combine blog-powers to educate, “Bug work is a fun way to get
involved!” I think the best effect will be if we coodinate together in
our blogs:
* Publish about the Hug Day Thursday October 2nd to get everyone
excited.
* Hug some bugs and add yourself to the HugDay’s wiki for your
readers!

Make a difference: Join the HugDay on Thursday October 2nd. We will be
in #ubuntu-bugs and #xubuntu-devel (FreeNode) all day and night, and
will be ready to answer your questions about how to help.

If you’re new to all this, head to
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/HelpingWithBugs

Have a nice day from the bugsquad,

Skydive

Sunday, August 31st, 2008

To the left, my jumpmaster/instructor. To the right, my name on the board to jump.

On the left, the perfectly good plane just as I jump, On the right, we see my parachute successfully deploys - bonus!

On the left, I’m coming in for the landing. On the right, I’m just about to hit the ground. Apparently, I had the highest precision out of all the student jumps that day.

Wow. Skydiving is fun. I think I’ll do it again tomorrow :-)

Another quick update

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Been busy busy as always :-). As of last Monday, I’m now an employee of Canonical as a Release Engineer for the OEM Services Custom Engineering Group.

Xubuntu is doing really well. We had our strategy document officially recognized by the CC at the last CC meeting (I’ll begin implementing the details September 1st). Furthermore, upstream relationships with Xfce4 are better than ever which I personally find very exciting. Finally, Xubuntu has finally reached a “critical mass” where as we have enough contributors that things get done without there having to be someone such as myself doing a bunch of hand holding. Go Xubuntu Team, Go! :-)

Last but not least, I bought a kitten. Pictures will be available soon.

IRC Council

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

I meant to blog about this earlier (and was hoping others would as well) but the IRC Council is currently looking to add two people to their ranks (to bring the total number of members on the council to 5). If I’m not mistaken, I believe they’re still accepting self-nominations by sending off a quick e-mail to the Ubuntu IRC mailing list (hopefully a current councilor will blog with more verbose details). Personally, I’d like to encourage both Alan Pope and Nick Ali to put their names forward as I think they’re excellent community members (and certainly no strangers to IRC) who have both shown interest in the council and I believe they’ll help make it a well rounded composition of backgrounds and expertise. This being said, I’m a fan of full disclosure so I gotta get the following dirt out in the open.

Above is Alan eatting ice cream in Prague (May 2008). What the viewer doesn’t know is that there are very prominent signs (yes, in English too) that clearly forbid the consumption of ice cream in the underground. Bad Popey!

Above is a some-what blurry shot of Jorge Castro. Intelligence reports show that Jorge was in close proximity of Alan while he ate said icecream illegally. How is this relevant? I’m not sure.

Here we see Nick Ali sleeping when he should have been in a session at UDS. Instead of an IRC nick boredandblogging maybe he should change it to boredandsleeping? :P hehe.

Seriously though, both great guys who would make an awesome addition to the IRC Council.
